The Montana Columbia Sheep Breeders Association is excited to offer a starter flock program to youth interested in raising registered Columbia Sheep. Selected recipients receive a gift of 4 registered ewes to begin their adventure. With the help of family and the guidance of a knowledgeable sponsor member of the association, this program is a stepping stone towards success for our young breeders.
To apply for a starter flock please review and download the application form and the contract:
Starter Flock Application is available! Applications are due postmarked no later than August 1.
Starter Flock Contract is also available for download.
Sponsor's Role:
1) Check in on the recipient and their flock, a minimum of twice a year, to ensure both the individual and the sheep are doing well and (the sheep) are healthy.
2) Assist the applicant with registering sheep, selecting replacements, finding a ram, oversee lambing season (if the applicant has never lambed before), and help ensure their entries are ready for the show and sale in Lewistown.
We highly recommend for starter flock applicants to provide a letter of sponsorship. It is preferred this letter come from an adult member of the association. Experienced family members have also been known to write letters of sponsorship; but one from an association member will receive higher precedence. To see if an adult association member is near you, please visit the Breeders Directory. If you have any questions concerning the starter flock application, please contact Luanne Wallewein. Contact information can be found in the Breeders Directory.
In August 2022, the Montana Columbia Sheep Breeder's Association was pleased to be able to award two starter flock winners! The Starter flock recipients receive their flock at the Show and Sale, and are also given a $50.00 credit towards the purchase of a registered ram at the sale.
*The number of starter flocks recipients is influenced by the number of applications received and/or the number of sheep that can be donated by breeders. (Only one starter flock recipient per year unless the committee receives a minimum of five applicants, then the committee may award two starter flock recipients.)
